Our Spring Term topic is based around The Great Fire of London. This is a very exciting topic which begins with a visitor into school who will arrive in role as a gentleman ‘Sir William Petty’ who lived through The Great Fire of London. This will be an interactive day with lots of child and adult participation! Your child will have the opportunity to handle real artefacts and take part in a dramatised version of the tragic event. Look out for the photos!
In English we will be focussing on a variety of genres e.g. recount, poetry, report and character profiles. You can help your child by encouraging them to write at home e.g. letters, notes, cards and reminding them to use the correct punctuation. We will also be focussing on using different joining words in sentences (and, so, but, because, if) and using adjectives (describing words) to add detail. As we progress further into Year 2 it’s important that your child reads regularly at home. 5-10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to their progress. When your child has finished reading ask them questions to ensure they have understood what they’ve read. Please refer to parent information booklet for sample questions.
In Maths we will begin by ordering numbers 0-100 from smallest to largest. You can help your child by talking about the value of numbers when you’re out and about and helping them count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10. Later in the term we’ll be learning about the value of coins, combining amounts of money and working out change. Playing ‘shop’ at home e.g. using food, toys, drinks would be a great way of improving their knowledge.
