Class 1

Welcome to Class 1

The teachers in class 1 are Mrs Martin and Mrs Haworth. Mrs Martin will be teaching Monday - Wednesday and Mrs Haworth will be teaching on Thursday and Friday. The teaching assistant is Mrs Jones and she will be working in class 1 Monday - Friday.

Please come in and talk to us if you have any queries / questions.

Our spring topic is ‘Super Humans’. It is a science based topic where children will learn about the food groups and what we can do to stay healthy. Children will plan and make their own healthy snack using their knowledge of food groups and then evaluate the end product. We will also look at how we are all unique and what living things need in order to survive. To help us with this a mother and baby will be visiting school to explain everything that the baby needs.

In English we will be focussing on non-chronological reports, instructions and poetry. You can help your child by encouraging them to write at home e.g. letters, notes, cards and reminding them to use the correct punctuation. We will also be focussing on using different joining words in sentences (and, so, but, because, if) and using adjectives (describing words) to add detail. As we progress further into Year 2 it’s important that your child reads regularly at home. 5-10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to their progress. When your child has finished reading ask them questions to ensure they have understood what they’ve read. Please refer to parent information booklet for sample questions.

In Maths we will begin by ordering numbers 0-100 from smallest to largest. You can help your child by talking about the value of numbers when you’re out and about and helping them count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10. We will look at a range of calculations including the symbols + - x and ÷ and discuss ways we can solve the questions. Later in the term we’ll be measuring the length and weight of objects and comparing these. We will also look at combining the amounts of money and finding the change.
